9 Truths Every Abuse Survivor Needs to Hear

April 08, 20253 min read

Dear Friend,

If you’ve carried pain in silence, please know this: healing is possible, and you are not alone. These 9 truths are offered from one survivor to another—with tenderness, truth, and hope in Christ.

Let these words remind you of who you really are and the love that still holds you.

9 Truths Every Survivor Needs to Hear

  1. What happened to you was not your fault.
    You are not to blame. Evil chose you, but God sees you—and He is your defender.

    So do not fear, for I am with you;
     do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
    I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

    (Isaiah 41:10)

  2. Your worth has never changed.
    Abuse does not define you. You are still fearfully and wonderfully made.

    So do not fear, for I am with you.
    I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
    (Psalm 139:14)

  3. Healing takes time, and that’s okay.
    There’s no shame in the process. Jesus is gentle with the brokenhearted.

    A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not quench;
    he will faithfully bring forth justice.
    (Isaiah 42:3)

  4. God grieves over what was done to you.
    He never approved of the abuse. His heart breaks with yours.

    Jesus wept.
    (John 11:35)

    The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,

    because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
    He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
    to proclaim freedom for the captives,
    and release from darkness for the prisoners.
    (Isaiah 61:1)

  5. You do not have to carry this alone.
    Healing happens in safe spaces—with God, wise counselors, and community.

    Carry each other's burdens,
    and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
    (Galatians 6:2)

  6. Shame is not yours to carry.
    The cross was enough. You are loved, washed, and free.

    There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,

    who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    (Romans 8:1)

    If we confess our sins,
    he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins
    and purify us from all unrighteousness.
    (1 John 1:9)

  7. You were made for more than survival.
    There is joy, connection, and peace still ahead. God’s story for you isn’t over.

    For I know the plans I have for you,
    declares the Lord,
    plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
    plans to give you hope and a future.

    (Jeremiah 29:11)

  8. God is patient with your healing process.
    You don’t have to rush. Healing isn’t linear, and God isn’t disappointed in your pace. He walks with you step by step.

    He refreshes my soul.
    He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.
    (Psalm 23:3)

    Being confident of this,
    that he who began a good work in you
    will carry it on to completion
    until the day of Christ Jesus.

    (Philippians 1:6)

  9. Your voice and your story matter.
    You were never meant to stay silent. God can redeem even the most painful parts of your story to bring hope and healing to others.

    They triumphed over him
    by the blood of the Lamb
    and by the word of their testimony;
    they did not love their lives so much
    as to shrink from death.

    (Revelation 12:11)

    Who comforts us in all our troubles,
    so that we can comfort those in any trouble
    with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

    (2 Corinthians 1:4)
