What Do You Have in Your Hand?

Have you ever felt like you had nothing to offer? That your past disqualifies you? That your pain has left you empty, unsure of where you fit or what you’re meant to do?
If you’ve ever asked, "What could God possibly do with someone like me?" — you’re not alone.

Many of us who have experienced deep wounding—whether through abuse, rejection, abandonment, or trauma—can feel like our hands are empty. We see others doing big things for God and think, “They must have something I don’t.” But I want to gently remind you of a story that God uses often in my own healing journey.

God’s Question to Moses

In Exodus 4:2, God asks Moses a simple but profound question:

“What is that in your hand?”
And Moses replies, “A staff.”

It wasn’t a sword, or a scroll, or a plan—it was a stick. Just a common shepherd’s tool. Yet God would use that staff to part seas, bring water from a rock, and lead an entire nation.

The question God asked Moses is the same one He asks us today:

What do you have in your hand?

Not, “What have you lost?” Not, “What did others take from you?” Not even, “What should you have had?”
But simply: What is in your hand right now?

Healing Begins with What You Still Carry

For those of us who have been abused or deeply hurt, this question might stir up emotions we’d rather not face. Maybe you feel like your hands are filled with fear, shame, or brokenness. But here's the good news: God doesn’t need your hands to be full of greatness—He just needs them to be open.

What’s in your hand?

  • A tear-stained journal?

  • A heart that longs to heal?

  • A story that’s still being written?

  • A small offering of time or creativity?

  • A burden you’re ready to surrender?

Even if what’s in your hand feels small, God sees it as enough. Because He is the One who brings power to the offering. He’s the One who makes something from what feels like nothing.

Your Pain Isn’t Wasted

I know what it’s like to carry a past that feels heavy and to wonder if God can truly redeem it. I’ve asked Him, time and again, “Why did this happen? What good can come from it?” But over the years, I’ve seen how God takes the broken pieces—my tears, my words, my experiences—and uses them to build bridges of healing for others.

God wastes nothing.

Even your pain, even your silence, even your longing to belong—He can use it all.

Start Where You Are

You don’t need a platform, a perfect plan, or polished words to begin. You just need to open your hand and offer what you have today.

It could be:

  • Praying for someone in pain.

  • Writing down your story.

  • Reaching out for help.

  • Holding space for someone else’s tears.

  • Saying, “Yes, Lord. Use me.”

God isn’t asking you to do something amazing—He’s asking you to trust that He can do something amazing with what you already have.
